Lean in Human Services: Developing an Agency-Wide Culture of Continuous Improvement

Wed. August 15| 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM | Coral Reef

San Mateo County Human Services Agency (HSA) will share results from a multi-year engagement with Lean. HSA recruited and developed a group of Lean Champions from across the agency sustain Lean practice through learning-by-doing, coaching, and facilitation.

For 2 years, HSA was supported by Koné Consulting in developing Lean; since that engagement ended in 2017, the Lean Champions, with support from Agency leadership and Staff Development, have demonstrated the capacity to continue this important work, and have helped make Lean part of "whatwe do around here."

When it comes to Lean, it is easy to see groups of people gathered around whiteboards and sticky notes, but it can be harder to see what sustained commitment from people at all levels of organization to continuous improvement of service delivery looks like. In this workshop, participants will learn what it takes to develop and sustain an internal group of Lean Champions, including successes and challenges in bringing Lean to all branches of the agency, the importance of support from leadership and buy-in from staff, and how to grapple with performance metrics and measure outcomes across a range of services and clients.
